Supports Long-Duration Capture of Gigabit Ethernet at Full Line Rate!

The ClearSight Network Time Machine is a next generation data capture and analysis system, capable of capturing from 10/100/Gigabit full duplex networks at full line rate, then analyzing data using the Award Wining ClearSight Networks Analyzer software.

The ClearSight Network Time Machine can handle 100% capture of data from two channels on10/100/Gigabit networks at full line-rate. This opens up the possibility
of collecting data over an extended time period under experimental conditions in order to capture and identify abnormal packets that can cause intermittent faults
or packets associated with unauthorized access.

How does an IT manager:

See what happened in the network
Troubleshoot and analyze network issues
Know if critical data is lost
Find out which applications are bottlenecks to preserve
Maintain a healthy network

ClearSight's Network Time Machine is the only answer to all questions.

Case Study -- Firewall Performance Verification

Spirent Test Center (STC) and Network Time Machine create an ideal environment for performance verification of firewalls.

STC provides the traffic to emulate both server and client for firewall stress testing. The objective is to understand firewall behavior as it reaches its performance limit, while gradually increasing the volume of traffic and number of users.

Network Time Machine is connected in the test network to capture and store 100% of the traffic during the test.

In this illustration STC is configured to increase server load linearly.

The server starts to behave abnormally 40 minutes into the test at approximately 2,200 transactions per second.

Since Network Time Machine has a capacity in excess of 3 TBytes of data, every packet is captured, stored and time stamped for analysis.

Network Time Machine's analysis function clearly reveals that TCP retransmissions take place as the firewall reaches its performance limit, preventing the firewall from processing traffic within allowable time constraints and causing server malfunction.

User Applications

NEMs -- Network device performance testing

Purpose

Long term functional test of network devices before
deployment at customer site.

Verification/troubleshooting in the lab after failure
at customer site.

Network Time Machine Solution

Network Time Machine can capture long-duration
data from a full duplex Gigabit Ethernet link.

It can also protect/lock packet data related to
problems based on SNMP traps. State-of-the-art
ClearSight Analyzer troubleshooting abilities are
also included.

ISP/Carrier -- Triple Play network troubleshooting

Purpose

Troubleshoot VoIP/video issues/failures during ISP's
VoIP/Video service.

Measure the quality of audio/video service over long
time intervals.

Pinpoint the cause of poor service quality down to
the packet level.

Network Time Machine Solution

Apply packet level analysis based on failure time.

Identify the cause with ClearSight Analyzer's
playback functions.

Identify the failure time based on VoIP QoS Alarm
and Call Logging. Verify the failure from audio/video
content reconstruction.

NTM 6.2.0

2007-09 Release

CSD Integration
In addition to the standalone NTM product, NTM 6.2 now offers a Network Time Machine Distributed (NTMD) product, which allows NTM Agents to be controlled remotely by an NTM Agent Manager and an NTM Agent Viewer, in a manner that very closely parallels the control of ClearSight Agents by a ClearSight Agent Manager and ClearSight Agent Viewer in the ClearSight Distributed (CSD) Product.

Auto Save Trace
The Auto Save Trace feature lets the user save captured packets to a set of external trace files. The user can specify the maximum size of each trace file, the maximum number of trace files, slice length, file format, and the target location for the files. The user can also apply filters, so that the trace files contain only data likely to be of interest. Some applications for this feature include:

  • Backing up network traffic data for long periods of time that would exceed the capacity of NTM's hard disk.
  • Transferring packet data to an external server, to be accessed and analyzed later.
  • Backing up network traffic data in case of trouble with the NTM itself.
  • Save Trace Filter Enhancement
Previously, configuration settings for saving trace files were controlled by two separate configuration pages – Save Trace Settings and Save Trace Filter. In NTM 6.2 these have been combined into a single Save Trace Settings page, which contains a Set/Remove filter button. Filters can now be defined in a manner that is consistent with the filter options in the ClearSight Analyzer (CSA).

    Configurable Update Intervals
This feature lets the user control how often the statistics counters in the Capture Workspace will be updated. By lengthening this update interval the user can reduce system loads and network traffic between Agent and Viewer.

    Disk Usage Display Enhancement
The display invoked by the Display Disk Usage button in the Records Toolbar has been expanded to include the timestamp of the first stored packet (excluding lock) – that is, the oldest packet in the storage area that can be overwritten.
